Join Jill for our next Vantage Executive Forum, presenting on “Cultivating Connection and Care at Work; A Remedy for Burnout and Exhaustion”
Burnout and exhaustion have been rippling through the workforce at alarming rates. Today’s workforce is twice as likely to report that they are “always exhausted” than they were only 20 years ago. Research from McKinsey and Co., reveals that 54% of our nation’s workforce do not feel valued by their organization, 52% do not feel valued by their manager, and 51% do not feel a sense of belonging at work. Gallup’s research states that a primary predictor of employee engagement is knowing there is someone at work who cares about you as a whole person. The negative outcomes of burnout are alarming.
Those who experience burnout are:
-63% more likely to take a sick day
-23% more likely to visit the emergency room
-More than twice as likely to be actively seeking a different job or an early retirement.
Think about ‘The Great Resignation’ here. Why is this happening? Research shows that it is not the quantity of work but the quality of the work experience where individuals do not feel seen, heard, or valued. Research from the American Psychological Association shows a strong link between social support at work and lower rates of burnout, greater work satisfaction and higher productivity. How do we fix this? A meaningful remedy for this situation is cultivating a socially connected culture of care in organizations. It begins with leaders and then everyone taking responsibility for learning how to respond effectively when others struggle and take specific actions that demonstrate care.
